  6.  I am putting together this little text file to help new users get
  7.  aquainted with setting up a multiplayer game at the  MODEM GAMELINK BBS.
  8.  
  9.  First of all, you will need SirDOOM   to play multiplayer DOOM here.
  10.  You can obtain this file as (sirdoom.zip) from  MODEM GAMELINK BBS
  11.  Obviously you need DOOM!  The most played one is DOOM II though.  You
  12.  need to get v1.9 a since everyone is required by id Software to have that.
  13.  If you have an earlier version, the connection won't work.  You can get
  14.  this patch also at many bbs's and on Internet and here in the patch library
  15.  If you are not sure what version you have, load DOOM II and check the top
  16.  red bar on load up screen.It will either say v1.666 or v1.17 or v1.17a.
  17.  ,1.9 is the version you will need to play here .Get the patches from the 
  18.  library.There are several patches so if one does not work you will need to
  19.  use amother or upgrade in steps.IE:1.66-1.7-1.7a-1.9 and so on.Be patient ,
  20.  it can take 30 minutes or so when you do the patch.
  21.  Start with a clean install of Doom {you do have the original still don't 
  22.  you}If not try to remove the added wads you may have laying around in the 
  23.  doom2 dir.

  25.  Like I mentioned earlier, there is a patch  to upgrade to v1.9 and it is 
  26.  free.Some of you may need to use more than one patch depending on what 
  27.  version you have.To play 4 players ,all must have the same version.

  29.  Ok, now you need to log onto the bbs.  I used my Term program that I 
  30.  normallyuse to connect, log on, and look around.  You can use Sirdoom if
  31.  you want,but don't expect to download files with that.  I use my Term
  32.  program for regular bbs use and Sirdoom when I am looking for some action!

  34.  MODEM GAMELINK BBS uses Major BBS software v6.25 and Sirrus Game
  35.  Connection to bring you online DOOMing.

  37.  Using SirDOOM v2.18 /2.28

  40.  There is a .doc file included with Sirdoom so please read that for detailed
  41.  information!  Basically in a nut shell, unzip Sirdoom into your DOOM II
  42.  or DOOM directory.  Like I mentioned, DOOM II is the popular one here and
  43.  most users are playing it.

  45.  Once it is unzipped, simply run Sirdoom and you will be in Terminal mode.
  46.  alt-z will display the different keys.  If you are lucky, the default
  47.  initialization string will work.   Try it first and if you have no luck, 
  48.  read the doc on editing the initialization string.

  50.  Now select alt-d for dialing menu.  You may need to edit MODEM GAMELINKS 
  51.  BBS <alt e> phone number to 1-603-788-2213 if you are out of the NEW
  52.  HAMPSHIRE area.Select the bbs number and press enter and you will dial out 
  53.  to the bbs.
  54.  Once connected, log on as usual.  You can then select "G" for Game 
  55.  Connection menu.  Once in there, it is self explanatory on the selections.
  56.  To immediately check on a game, you can select "M" to enter a game channel.
  57.  Once you begin chatting with other players you will set up your game.
  58.  Whether you want to play an external WAD or any parameter.

  60.  To play something other than the regular DOOM II, you may need to edit
  61.  your "args line" (arguments) in Sirdoom.  Simply, while online, press
  62.  ALT-C and then go to "set up DOOM" you will see some obvious selections
  63.  and at the bottom, "args" that is where you would enter the following.

  65.  -nomonsters        (used almost 100% of the time, so you need it)
  66.  -file <name>.wad   (used if everyone is going to play a WAD)
  67.  -warp #            (used to start a different level ie #7 = Map 07)

  69.  A typical line would look like this
  70.  -nomonsters -file xxxx.wad 
  71.  
  72. You then will have to select "Save and Exit" in the alt-c menu to get
  73.  back.
  74.  Note:  Sometimes Sirdoom will lock up so simply alt-x and select Y,
  75.  then retype Sirdoom and that should put you back in the bbs.  Don't
  76.  disconnect.

  78.  When playing do not drop carrier on purpose during the game.  If you
  79.  want to leave simply tell the other players.  ("T" during DOOM let's you
  80.  chat), then hit esc and exit DOOM normally.

  82.  There are several other things you may want to do such as read the help
  83.  bulletin in the main menu of the bbs.  It explains how to use the bbs.
  84.  Also read the .doc in Sirdoom.

  86.  Sometimes you may find yourself the "Moderator or Host"  don't panic,
  87.  someone will usually guide you through.  But if your told to start the
  88.  game, then you would type "/start" (no quotes)  the  the host will select
  89.  alt-s to get the game going.

  91.  I hope this text makes it easier for you to get going with Multiplayer
  92.  DOOM.  It takes a couple of tries, but after that it is easy!
